The Portugal Series

 

The Portugal Series is a series of Ceramic hanging planters I have created inspired by my own experience of living in a city.

Today, city dwellers often lack the proper access to natural space, and find themselves surrounded by the  ‘Man made’. I wanted to change this and make a difference, I wanted to bring life back into the concrete walls. 

 

I became aware of the benefits we gain as humans on our cognitive functions and emotional needs once being exposued to nature, after being influenced by my research into Biophilic design and architecture. 

This helped me in my work to provide a practical solution with Hanging planters, and attempts to inject a bit of nature into a city home by bringing the outdoors in.

 

For many, living in the city means downsizing and opting for smaller homes, leaving them with less space  to utilize,  so taking this into account - I have designed the planters to hang by organic cotton cord in order to leave the individual with more surface space. 

The glaze used on these Ceramics was inspired by all the textures I encountered when visiting Ursa beach in Portugal, seeking to capture the haphazardly formed textures and the atypical patterns formed over many years on the surface of rocks by the costal erosion process.
