Transitional  States

Transitional  States was the product of research into the Biophilia Hypothesis, a theory that humans have a biological connection with living things and the natural environment. Stephen Kellert described this connection as a ‘human need, fired in the crucible of evolutionarily development for deep and intimate association with the natural environment.’ (Kellert, S. and Wilson, E. (1993).

Reflecting on my time spent at Bãi Bien Gành Dau Beach, Phú Quoc I endeavoured to create ceramic pieces that encapsulate my own personal experience of Biophilia and respond to tangible objects, such as rocks and shells that I found lining the coast, through textures and tones.

This project lead me to develop a wide range of unconventional tactile glazes. Discarding traditional and conventional boundaries of glaze, resulted in metamorphic degradation or growth states occurring in the kiln firing process and being captured in time.
