Clay Networks

Following my placement working for Dr. CJ O’Neill on a project for her PHD - in which I built a 3D printer** alongside 3 fellow artists I was awarded an Undergraduate six week Scholarship to partake in the preparation and exhibition of Clay Networks - a week long residency and interactive instillation by Dr CJ O’Neill.

This project aimed to highlight the value of interaction between individuals, the exchange of knowledge within the ceramic 3D printing industry; and how digital technology - commonly used to form online networks - can promote meaningful connections that otherwise may not have occurred.

To demonstrate this concept, we toured with Clay Networks across the sites of the British Ceramics Biennial and produced digital portrait silhouettes of members of the public. These silhouettes were then paired together and combined with a portrait of someone who had contributed to the development of the Clay Networks project using CAD software, creating all together new individual faces. We then used the Ceramic Delta 3D printer to bring these models to life, whilst inviting the public to overlook each silhouette printed layer by layer.
